At the Outdoor Retailer convention this year, I discovered Goodhew socks. Goodhew has been making socks since late 2008, and are a noteworthy new entrant to the performance sock market.
They make a range of high performance socks and lifestyle socks, that are all manufactured in the USA and constructed of high quality wicking materials.
For hikers, Goodhew makes a Medium weight hiking sock, constructed of merino wool, nylon, and spandex. I’ve been testing a pair of the unisex Medium Hikers, and I’m quite impressed!
Goodhew sock features:
- Arch support. A comfortable band of support in the arch area.
- Flat toe seams. This helps prevent toe discomfort.
- Y-Heel construction. This makes the sock fit your foot better and prevents heel slippage.
- Spandex throughout the sock. Another feature I noticed is that there is spandex throughout the sock, making the seemingly large looking sock fit my narrow foot very well. Some retailers are calling them “Men’s” socks, but they are unisex (ie, the Medium fits women’s shoes 7.5 to 10.5)
- Comes up high on the calf. Compared to other light and medium hiking socks I’ve worn, the Goodhew sock comes up a bit higher on the calf, which is nice for colder weather hiking and for extra support.
I pair the Goodhew medium weight hiking socks with my toe sock liners to help prevent blisters, and find that the socks do a great job of keeping moisture away from my feet. I find them to be comparable to SmartWool hiking socks, yet they are a fraction of the price! Goodhew socks are sold in 2-packs for about $22, compared to SmartWool socks at $14-20 each!
