On my recent Hawaiian hiking adventure I took along a pair of the award winning Ahnu Sugarpine Air Mesh shoes.
The women’s Sugarpine Air Mesh shoes are quite comfortable, since they fit and feel more like an athletic shoe than a low-top hiking shoe. The hot and wet climate of Hawaii was a perfect place to put them to the test!
What surprised me the most? They are so light weight! It is hard to find a pair of hiking shoes that aren’t heavy and clunky and feel like hiking shoes.
The Ahnu Sugarpines were quickly forgotten by my feet after I put them on, and due to the mesh construction instead of leather, there really wasn’t any need to break them in before wearing them.
The pair I tested were not the waterproof version, so luckily I did not take them on the waterfall hike along Kauai’s NaPali Coast! However, I used them the entire time I trekked around Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.
The soles of the Sugarpine Air Mesh provided excellent traction on the crusty dried lava flows from the 1970s, thanks to the Vibram soles.
Overall, a great lightweight hiking shoe. Get the waterproof version if you hike a lot in rainy conditions or in wet areas with stream crossings.
