If you have a fascination with adventure, and love to read stories about climbing Kilimanjaro (without a permit!), summiting K2, and exploring the Andes, then you’ll enjoy Risking Adventure: Mountaineering Journeys Around the World.
The Canadian mountaineer Jim Haberl published this book about many of his worldwide climbing adventures with beautiful photographs shortly before his untimely death in 1999. The combination of breathtaking pictures (which I always enjoy seeing!) and interesting stories make the book a nice coffee table addition. Haberl clearly was a man on a quest for adventure, and his stories of ski-mountaineering, and climbing the most difficult peaks in the world sure are fun to hear.
I must say that I am more comfortable looking at Haberl’s pictures from the comfort of my sofa rather than imagining the physical pain to get to these gorgeous places, and more importantly, I can’t even imagine the emotional pain he must have felt in many of the tragic events he describes in the book.
