What Knife Do You Take on the Trail?

Gerber CrucialI’ve recently been testing the Gerber Crucial, a multi-tool that is a compact pocket size, yet heavy tool to take along backpacking.

I’ve used Cold Steel knives in the past, and like their sturdy design. Have you found multi-tools handy on the trail, or do you stick to lighter weight knives to shed extra pack weight?

Thanks for the comment, Robert. I have found my Cold Steel knifes to be very durable. I agree that super light weight knives could be problematic in a real emergency situation.

The picture at that angle is terrific!
Note, taking a light wt. knife could be a problem if it is really needed as it may break in heavy use; I would think the “multi-tools” may be the way to go then having use of many tools including a good quality knife, perhaps as part of the the multi-tool or in addition to the multi-tool

    Hi Hiking Lady,

This is the coolest knife I’ve ever seen. Thanks for sharing. I definitely could use something like this.
