An Epic Adventure? That is what Jennifer Pharr Davis certainly encountered on her 2,175 mile Appalachian Trail journey!
After graduating from college, 21 year old Jennifer set out on a solo thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, starting in Georgia with the goal of reaching Maine. In her book Becoming Odyssa: Epic Adventures on the Appalachian Trail, Jennifer recounts her experiences in a funny, engaging manner that made me not want to put this book down!
Along the way, Jennifer meets interesting characters, some she shares stories with, and others she speed hikes away from! Two other AT hikers, Bill Bryson and Dennis Blanchard, who wrote about their adventures in their respective books A Walk in the Woods and Three Hundred Zeroes each had their fair share of humorous stories, but this book is uniquely from a woman’s perspective and a very young one at that!
The book is well written by a tenacious young lady who finds new friends on the trail, and like so many other thru hikers discovers more about herself. A fun, engaging, and interesting book!
Also note that Jennifer Pharr Davis is attempting a new speed record on the Appalachian Trail.
Hiking Lady’s Recommendation: 4.5 of 5 stars
Excellent book Hiking Lady!!!! It was funny and her first and final attempt with the cooking stove is a hoot. I admired her tenacity and courage. I really thought she was going to end up married to her hiking partner. I loved her descriptions of the beauty in various states it is a different variation from the mens.
