Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills is the true authoritative guide to mountaineering!
It is a comprehensive text book with everything you’ll need to know about hiking, backpacking, snow travel, and much more! While the advanced climbing and rope techniques chapters can be read by those of you who want to climb Everest, the rest of us can just read the more basic chapters 🙂
Even if you never plan to go on a technical expedition and don’t plan on learning knotting and rappelling techniques, the book is full of information on the basics: adventure apparel, choosing the right gear, reading topographic maps, using a compass, leave no trace techniques, staying safe in the wilderness, and much more!
Don’t be intimidated by the 575 pages… it is a reference book and should be treated as such. The drawings and diagrams make it easy to follow some of the more complicated topics discussed in the book. No wonder world famous climbers like Ed Viesturs make this their reference book of choice!
