Ultralight Tents

For those Hiking Lady readers that like to add a little bit more adventure to their hikes, and go on backpacking trips, then you already know how heavy tents can be!

This year at the Outdoor Retailer Show, I discovered the brand new Easton Kilo tent, which is a 2 person tent that is waterproof, and relatively roomy (for an ultralight tent!). The kicker is that it weighs under 1 kilogram (~2 pounds), hence the name, Kilo Tent.

Reader Julie asked about the Easton Kilo Tent…She’s deciding between the Kilo, the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL tent, and the Nemo Meta. Here’s my two cents on her question about the best ultralight tents. What features are important to you when you’re tent shopping? I’d love to hear in the comments!

Cool! The picture makes it look like the pole stays up well. The one I’ve tried is this 1 pound bivy sack from Brooks Range. It is a great bivy for the weight, but not waterproof. Plus, I am still used to the comfort of a tent. One day I may make the switch… perhaps when I buy more serious photography equipment 😉

Great point! That is definitely something to keep in mind. What type of bivy sack are you using?

  3. I mostly look at how much space the tent takes up in my pack. As a photographer with a big camera, I gotta be careful about saving space in that backpack, so I’ve actually just started using a waterproof bivy instead of a tent. Hardly takes up any space at all.
