Calories Burned Walking & Hiking?

Calories burned walking Want to know how many calories are burned when walking and hiking? Let’s just say that both are fantastic ways to spend an hour or more of your time. You can enjoy the fresh air, nature, beautiful vistas, and burn more calories than in most other activities!

Assuming 1 hour of activity, and a person who weighs 150 pounds, there are a lot of calories to be burned with some of our favorite outdoor activities ๐Ÿ™‚

Backpacking: 476 calories burned per hour!

Hiking: 408 calories burned per hour!

Walking: 170 calories burned walking on a flat surface at 2 miles per hour (pretty slow pace!)

Just another reason to get outside this summer!

    Glad to hear lots of calories get burned coming back down the mountains Steve V! And I have gone up Grouse Grind and I can believe I burned at least 900 calories!

    HI Hiking Lady,

    I’m looking at this again and am happy to be reminded that one can really burn calories just walking too. Something good to remember when I don’t have time for a long hike. Summer is coming…I’m so excited to get outside again!

    Yes, definitely. Calories burned will also be determined by the weight of the hiker/walker. The bottom line is that hiking is a fantastic workout! I love it ๐Ÿ™‚

    Intensity matters hugely. Here in Vancouver we have a very steep “hike” that people essentially use like a gym. It takes fit people around 45 minutes, and some over an hour.

    Many poeple have used various heart rate monitors to assess the workout and most figures show between 900 and 1100 burned.

    What shocked me when I started messing with HR monitors on the trail was how many are burned on the downhill!

    I have always heard that walking is the best exercise but I find that climbing up the hilly paths is really a good workout.
    Glad to know I can burn up so many calories too.

    Yep, that is why Hiking is such a great activity! Plus you get to be outside and enjoy nature, while getting (or staying) in great shape! Happy Trails!

    Wow that is fantastic! So if I hike for an hour I’ll burn 408 calories?! No wonder I like to munch on snacks while I’m hiking just to keep my energy up.
