Every hiker needs a pair of trekking poles. If you don’t believe me, then you may not have read Hiking 101: Trekking Poles . So take a pause now, check that out, and learn why trekking poles help with stability, balance, and can save your knees. Okay, you’re convinced? Then read on, because I tested out a pair of Montem Ultra Strong Trekking Poles. These are budget friendly ($49.99 compared to double or triple that for most on the market), yet still have most of the bells and whistles you’ll want in a pair of trekking poles.
About Montem Ultra Strong Trekking Poles
Montem is a new small start up company based in New York City, and they have developed this neat pair of trekking poles that are priced quite affordably. They are made of extra durable aluminum shafts, they have flick locks (which are easy to use compared to some other locking mechanisms on the market), and come with mud baskets (for most trail uses) and rubber tips (for hard surface walking). Keep in mind that most other poles require those trekking pole accessories be purchased separately. That’s a great value since I’ve plunked down $5-$15 each for those accessories in the past.
While the Montem Ultra Strong Trekking Poles are not the lightest aluminum poles on the market, they have a solid feel to them and are comfortable to use. Over time, aluminum holds up and tends to last longer than carbon fiber. The EVA foam grips of the Montem poles help to absorb shock. Plus, even though EVA foam is not as expensive as natural cork, I tend to like it better than natural cork because they tend to be less sweaty.
Specs:
- Materials: Aluminum 7075
- Grip: EVA foam; strap length is adjustable
- Length: 24-53 inches/61-135cm
- Locking System: Flex Locking System (very easy to use)
- Weight (for a pair): 19.2 oz.
Where to Buy:
Montem’s Ultra Strong Trekking Poles are available at Montem Life’s website and Amazon.com.
As noted earlier, Montem is a neat NYC based start-up and in addition to these trekking poles, they also have a very comfortable and useful Sneaky Snuggler Blanket for camping!
The Verdict
These Montem Ultra Strong Trekking Poles are an excellent value, lightweight enough for most hikers, and given the materials will likely last a long time. For those of you who hike hundreds of hours a year and go on multi-day backpacking journeys and need something 6 ounces lighter, check out the REI Flash Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles.
Happy trails!
You’re welcome, Hiking Doc. Thanks for sharing your own experiences about EVA foam vs. natural cork in trekking poles!
Great point Bobbi C! Happy trails!
The trekking poles are not only good for hikers to assist them in the hike but they are also a good tool to fend off snakes and critters on the trail; they can be a useful for older walkers in their daily exercise.
I agree with your thoughts about EVA foam versus natural cork. Natural cork feels nice in the store, but on a long hike I have found EVA foam to be more comfortable. I have been considering a new set of trekking poles, and these look great, so thank you for posting this review.
These really do look nice. I’ll check out the website that you recommended!
Thank you Hiking Lady. I’ve never gone wrong with any of your advice. 🙂
