Headed to Africa? A trip to California’s Sierra Nevadas in the summer? You will have to remember Function Over Fashion when shopping for a mosquito hat net. Don’t risk itchy, unsightly mosquito bites on your face.

I tested my Outdoor Research Bug Bucket Hat this summer near Bishop Lakes in July, and I was thankful that I had bought it and brought it with me! I was first introduced to the Outdoor Research brand when I bought my Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero and I have been extremely impressed by the quality of their products. This mosquito hat net has an ingenious design – when I was hiking in mosquito free territory, all I had to do was store the netting under the top of the hat (alternatively it can roll up over the edge of the hat), then when the bugs came swarming back, all I had to do was pull down the netting.

Other mosquito hats I’ve tried have limited visibility – but with this hat I have never had problems seeing out through the netting.

Drawbacks: It isn’t too fashionable to be walking around with a net attached to your hat… but if you hike in the summer in mosquito season you’ll understand why a product like this is important to keep with you.
