Those of us who hike regularly at altitude are likely not surprised by the findings of the recent study from a German university hospital… 20 subjects hiked for 1 week at 8,700 feet on Germany’s highest mountain and burned an extra 268 calories per day!

When I’m up in the California Sierra Nevada’s, I don’t need a scientific team along to let me know that I’m burning more calories when I hike at that altitude. I know it by how fit I feel and look after a long weekend of fun activity!

This study is interesting though because it confirms that hiking at altitude is indeed an excellent way to get in shape. Doctor Florian Lippl of the Ludwig-Maximilians University Hospital in Munich, Germany conducted a study of 20 obese men. He sent them to the top of Zugspitze. They stayed their for a week, eating their normal foods, exercising a normal amount. What happened? Well they lost about 3 pounds each, and after they returned to Munich, Germany, they were still burning calories faster than normal.

    I agree. I lost about 6 lbs when I climbed Mt Kilimanjaro but.. gained 10lbs the month after because I was hungry all the time ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hiking is really great early at the morning. It may hard to wake up but that is part of discipline. As for me, I’d love to walk around early at the morning. And it’s nice to go out and have exercise around the community. And also for the food, discipline of eating the right food can also loose weight. Proper diet is really important.

    Yeah, it is great isn’t it! They haven’t published an update yet, but if I see something I’ll be sure to share it. Even if the effect lasts for just a few days it is worth it in my opinion ๐Ÿ˜‰

    I love the side benefit of losing weight faster in the mountains. I wonder how long the effect lasted once back in Munich.
