Cool New Hiking Products!

I am always looking for interesting new hiking apparel, gear, and snacks. Every year it seems like there are lots of new toys for us hikers, and this year I’ve seen a lot of great innovation! The research and development departments must be very busy these days…

New Stuff for the Trail:

Columbia Omni Heat Columbia Omni Heat: Columbia Sportswear has developed a brand new product line called Omni Heat, that uses thermal reflective technology to help retain body heat in apparel.

The weather is still too warm here in Southern California for me to give it a try, but it looks very interesting. Inside each of the Omni Heat products are a dotted matrix of silver aluminum specs, that are said to keep the wearer 20% warmer. They work like a space blanket, but the dotted matrix helps regulate the temperature to prevent overheating. I can’t wait to try out the Omni Heat gear in snowshoeing season!

UnderArmour ReCharge Compression Socks UnderArmour ReCharge Compression Socks: These are amazing! After a long day of hiking or a tough trail run, I slip on these socks and they make my legs feel great! These UnderArmour socks are designed for athletes to wear after a big game or a tough workout, but they are great for post-hikes and post-runs too! They are relatively thin, come up over the calf and really helps increase the circulation in my legs.

I now wear them after runs and hikes, and I plan to start wearing these on long airplane flights and even long car trips up to the Sierra Nevada mountains. No need for sore and stiff legs anymore!

Clif Bar Crunch Clif Bar Crunch: I picked up a couple of boxes of the new Clif Bar Crunch at my local grocery store. Yum is the word for these snacks! My favorite is the Chocolate Chip bars, which are loaded with chocolate bits surrounded by crunchy oats.

Each package comes with 2 bars, so they’re great for sharing on the trail. When one package slipped to the bottom of my backpack the bars got a bit crumbly, but they sure still tasted great!

Out of the Blue BiFocal Sunglasses Out of the Blue BiFocal Sunglasses: The sunglass company Out of the Blue has designed a line of very practical and affordable sunglasses that are perfect for hikers! Fumbling around for reading glasses when it is time to read the map is never fun, so Out of the Blue has solved that problem!

The new Sun Readers provide great sun protection, and have built in biofocal lenses. There are very fashionable styles as well as practical ones with rubber nose pads that prevent slippage during outdoor activities. Check out the gear review of the Out of the Blue Sun Readers for more.

Happy trails!
