What Hiking “Toddler” Loves (& Hates!)

Hiking Baby is now a little toddler, making his way an opinionated 20 month old, and clearly has a lot of preferences and dislikes. What are his favorite hiking shoes? Snacks? Toothpaste? Find out what Hiking Baby loves (and hates) when he and Hiking Lady aren’t hitting the trails!

Also see last year’s post: What Hiking Baby Loves (&Hates!) to hear his preferences on bottles, formula and much more!

MEALTIME! Hiking Baby’s Vote  Hiking Lady’s Comments
OXO Tot Transitions Straw Cup with Removable Handles

No straw training needed.  He just picked this up and sucked away at his water!  Be sure to buy some replacement straws – ours tend to get lost or chopped up in the garage disposal!
Fisher Price Booster Seat

No more Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair for Hiking Baby!  Once he saw his buddy sit in a booster seat, he wanted one too…Now mealtime is very pleasant with Hiking Baby in his big boy chair!
Munchkin Stay Put Suction Bowls

Hiking Baby loves playing with these, not eating from them!  The concept is fantastic – the bowls have suction on the bottom so that they don’t move when on the baby’s high chair tray.  However, strong little Hiking Baby just yanks hard and up they come!
RX Bar Kids

I often grab these mini RX Bars as my own snack, but they are the perfect protein packed healthy treat for Hiking Baby on the trail.  He loves to get out of his stroller, grab his sippy cup and hand me an RXBar Kids to open.
Happy Baby Happy Munchies

Lots of crunch packed with lots of fortified nutrition!  Another favorite Hiking Baby snack 🙂
Happy Baby Hearty Meals Root Vegetables & Turkey

A perfect hearty meal for lunchtime on the trail!  Another favorite of Hiking Baby is the Hearty Meals Harvest Vegetables & Chicken!
Plum Organics Tots Mighty Sticks Apple Carrot Snacks

Light yet satisfying, making them an essential in Hiking Lady’s hiking backpack!  Hiking Baby loves holding one stick in each hand.
Ella’s Kitchen Nibbly Fingers Mangoes & Carrots

Much more filling than the Mighty Sticks above.  These are a perfect on-the-go snack when Hiking Baby is really hungry!
Carr’s Whole Wheat Crackers

These are Hiking Baby’s favorite “cookies”!
PLAY TIME!
Step2 Woodland Climber

Climbing walls? A ladder? And a slide!  Yes, he loves it!  This is one great backyard toy for a little toddler.
Honeysticks 100% Pure Beeswax Crayons

Non toxic crayons made from beeswax and shaped into chubby toddler friendly crayons!  We love them!
Glockenspiel (Baby Xylophone), from Jack & Jill Music

Hiking Baby loves playing with this when we are at home, and I appreciate the true to tone sounds!
Urban Infant Chunky Sidewalk Chalk

  Non-toxic and fun to play with.  Will be more fun when Hiking Baby is pre-school age.
Charlie’s Boat, by Kit Chase

  Hiking Baby loves the first two Kit Chase books, Lulu’s Party and Oliver’s Tree. This recent publication is a new and much loved addition to Hiking Baby’s library!
IN THE NURSERY/HOME!
Pampers Splashers

Easy to get on and VERY easy to remove when Hiking Baby is sopping wet after playing at the pool or beach.
Seventh Generation Baby Wipes

Moister than the Honest Company Baby Wipes, yet not as thick.  I switched to these after the Honest Company Baby Wipes had a recall and weren’t available for a couple of months.
OXO Sit Right Potty Seat

? Potty training hasn’t started yet for Hiking Baby; will update you when we have a chance to put this to use!
LOOKING STYLISH!
Orgrimmar Baby Boys Genuine Leather Soft Sole Shoes

Soft leather soles are perfect for around the house on cool days.  These shoes are affordably priced (under $20), made of genuine leather, and help little feet develop properly.
Little Kid’s Stride Rite Made2Play® Sneaker Boot

  Affordable (I paid $20), and fairly easy to get on Hiking Baby’s feet for a trip to the snow!
Little Kid’s Stride Rite Soft Motion Cameron Shoe

  I love the Stride Rite Soft Motion shoes.  They are bendable, so perfect for little feet to be able to flex and move naturally.
Keen Newport H2 Water Friendly Sandal



Ideal for Hiking Baby’s laps in the wading pool, playing with the hose, and hot hikes.  They dry quickly and don’t smell (like leather shoes) when they are washed.
See Kai Run – Ryan II Leather Sandal

Good for hot days that don’t involve water play!
Umi – Jason Double Strap Sneaker

  Hiking Baby refused to even put them on.  He did not like how they were confining around the ankle.
Stride Rite Soft Motion Dawson Shoe

Stride Rite’s Soft Motion line is amazing. The shoes are flexible and designed for proper foot development, and Hiking Baby loves wearing them. You’ll see these whenever you see Hiking Baby on the Hiking Lady Instagram page!
GETTING TO THE TRAILHEAD & ON THE TRAIL!
Britax Roundabout Convertible Car Seat

He hates it.  Hands down.  It is a battle to even get him into my car now that he’s sat in the Diono Radian Car Seat.  (see the Hiking Baby full review here) Since HB is still backwards facing (we will switch him forward at 35 pounds), the Diono is way more comfortable, enables him to look out the windows, all while stretching his legs.
Diono Radian RXT

HB loves the Diono Radian RXT Car seat!  See why in the Hiking Baby review: Diono Radian RXT vs. Britax Roundabout
Thule Stroller cupholder

Awesome product, but WAY overpriced.  Fits well with the Thule Urban Glide stroller.
Wet Ones Antibacterial Hand Wipes

Essential for when the baby wipes don’t cut it and you need something antibacterial!
FOR MOMMY!
What to Expect in the Second Year

Not as helpful as What to Expect in the First Year, but still worth reading.
IN THE MEDICINE CABINET
Jack N’ Jill Natural Toothpaste

    Safe to swallow, fluoride free.
STAYING SAFE AT HOME
Skip Hop Moby Bath Spout Cover, Universal Fit

A cute invention to soften any run-ins with the tub spout!
Safety 1st/Dorel Oven Lock

  Keep your little one out of the oven. Ever since he started standing up, a favorite place to hang on was the bar on the oven.  Not to fear, Safety 1st’s Oven Lock keeps Hiking Baby out!

Hope this list is helpful to you and your little one!  Happy trails!
