Favorite Retailers
Since I am a self-diagnosed gear-o-holic,
I have done my fair share of outdoor gear and adventure apparel shopping.
Avid readers of Hiking Lady know that I’m intently focused on finding the best deals, without sacrificing service or quality. So if you’re in the market for some hiking boots, adventure apparel, or even a new pair of Teva water shoes like I just bought for kayaking, then check out my favorite retailers below.
Hiking Lady’s Favorite Online Retailers
Altrec.com: Altrec has a very good online store with a lot more than just hiking and backpacking gear. In fact they have everything from ski gear to yoga pants! Spend just $45 for free shipping, and look for special deals on the updated Deals of the Month blog posts. |
Amazon Outdoors: Yes, Amazon.com sells a lot more than books these days! They have an entire section of their store set up for people like us who like to get outdoors. Just $25 for free shipping if product is sold through Amazon. |
Backcountry.com: Backcountry has everything an avid hiker, backpacker, and skiier would need, and generally at very good prices! They offer free shipping on orders over $50. |
Eastern Mountain Sports: When I lived in Philadelphia, Eastern Mountain Sports was where I bought my hiking clothes and cozy fleeces. They’ve got great customer service, and have an online store that has all of the top brands of outdoor gear and apparel. |
Moosejaw: The guys at Moosejaw are hilarious! If you don’t know what I’m talking about then you certainly haven’t shopped on their website. They have a really wide selection of apparel and some gear for sale too. I’ve found some really good deals – I bought my North Face snow pants and my La Sportiva boots at Moosejaw. And they’ve got a good Rewards program and frequent sales. $49 for free shipping. |
Norway Sports: These guys have GREAT deals on top quality gear. You just have to look our for it. My favorite Asolo Stynger Boots were just on sale for 40% off in their Outlet store. Since they offer free shipping AND free return shipping on orders over $49.99, shoe and boot shopping is a great option with Norway Sports. |
Patagonia: Patagonia’s website has the full selection of their phenomenal clothing line. There products are sometimes hard to find at other retailers, so why not just go straight to the source? I have found a lot of great high quality eco friendly Patagonia apparel on sale here too! |
REI-Outlet: This is where you can find all the really good deals at REI – their online outlet store! Free shipping if you spend over $75, and always can get free shipping to your local REI store. |
Summit Hut: For all of the hardcore hikers out there that sleep in expedition tents and wear crampons as you summit ice covered mountains…then Summit Hut has what you need. They offer free shipping on orders over $50 or free pickup at their Arizona stores. |
Hiking Lady’s Favorite Hiking Gear and Apparel Stores

Adventure 16: Adventure 16 is a local Southern California outdoor retailer that carries all of the top outdoor brands like Patagonia, The North Face, JetBoil, etc. Unfortunately they’ve had to close down some of their locations including in Costa Mesa, CA and Torrance, CA and they don’t sell any products online. But if you are in the Los Angeles or San Diego area, they’re a good place to shop for gear, and they often host events and lectures. |
REI: Recreational Equipment Inc has locations across the U.S. What I really like about REI is their generous return policy, and the fact that you can order product online (including at their Outlet store) and have it shipped to the store for free pickup. It’s hard to beat that! Unfortunately they don’t have stores everywhere, so you may have to just use their online store if you don’t live close to an REI. Like Adventure 16, they often host free events and lectures, and they also organize paid classes and trips. Free shipping over $75 and free shipping with no minimum to local REI stores. |
