Favorite Retailers

Since I am a self-diagnosed gear-o-holic, ;) I have done my fair share of outdoor gear and adventure apparel shopping.

Avid readers of HikingLady.com know that I’m intently focused on finding the best deals, without sacrificing service or quality. So if you’re in the market for some hiking boots, adventure apparel, or even a new pair of Teva water shoes like I just bought for kayaking, then check out my favorite retailers below.

Hiking Lady’s Favorite Hiking Gear and Apparel Stores

Adventure-16 Adventure 16: Adventure 16 is a local Southern California outdoor retailer that carries all of the top outdoor brands like Patagonia, The North Face, JetBoil, etc. Unfortunately they’ve had to close down some of their locations including in Costa Mesa, CA and Torrance, CA and they don’t sell any products online. But if you are in the Los Angeles or San Diego area, they’re a good place to shop for gear, and they often host events and lectures.
REI REI: Recreational Equipment Inc has locations across the U.S. What I really like about REI is their generous return policy, and the fact that you can order product online (including at their Outlet store) and have it shipped to the store for free pickup. It’s hard to beat that! Unfortunately they don’t have stores everywhere, so you may have to just use their online store if you don’t live close to an REI. Like Adventure 16, they often host free events and lectures, and they also organize paid classes and trips.

Hiking Lady’s Favorite Online Retailers

Altrec Altrec.com: Altrec has a very good online store with a lot more than just hiking and backpacking gear. In fact they have everything from ski gear to yoga pants! You generally have to pay for shipping unless you spend over $45, but they often have free shipping specials, which I try to include on my updated Deals of the Month blog posts.

Amazon Outdoors
Amazon Outdoors: Yes, Amazon.com sells a lot more than books these days! They have an entire section of their store set up for people like us who like to get outdoors.

Campsaver
CampSaver: CampSaver has all of the hiking and camping essentials, from a wide range of tents and stoves to first aid kits and adventure apparel. They offer free shipping on orders over $50.

Eastern Mountain Sports
Eastern Mountain Sports: When I lived in Philadelphia, Eastern Mountain Sports was where I bought my hiking clothes and cozy fleeces. They’ve got great customer service, and have an online store that has all of the top brands of outdoor gear and apparel.

Moosejaw
Moosejaw: The guys at Moosejaw are hilarious! If you don’t know what I’m talking about then you certainly haven’t shopped on their website. They have a really wide selection of apparel and some gear for sale too. I’ve found some really good deals – I bought my North Face snow pants and my La Sportiva boots at Moosejaw. And they’ve got a good Rewards program.

Patagonia
Patagonia: Patagonia’s website has the full selection of their phenomenal clothing line. There products are sometimes hard to find at other retailers, so why not just go straight to the source? ;) I have found a lot of great high quality eco friendly Patagonia apparel on sale here too!
Play Outdoors Play Outdoors: If you hike with your kids and need some gear for the little ones, Play Outdoors has it! From kids clothing and backpacks to snowshoes and more! You do have to pay for shipping if you buy under $45 worth of products.

REI-Outlet
REI-Outlet: This is where you can find all the really good deals at REI – their online outlet store! I buy hiking gear here all the time and then have it shipped to my local REI store for free.
Summit Hut Summit Hut: For all of the hardcore hikers out there that sleep in expedition tents and wear crampons as you summit ice covered mountains…then Summit Hut has what you need. They offer free shipping on orders over $50 or free pickup at their Arizona stores.
