A Serious Winter Boot!

Keen Hoodoo High Lace Boots

Keen has a pair of women’s winter boots that are downright warm and offer great protection from the elements! I tested out the Keen Hoodhoo High Lace Boots this winter on several snowshoeing trips and some hikes in muddy, wet conditions.

Unlike most winter boots, they are made of oiled nubuck leather, and have the signature durable toe protection found on almost all Keen sandals and boots. Leather boots are generally very durable and can easily be re-waterproofed, making it a good option for winter boots.

Pros:

  • Comes Up High Around the Calf The Keen Hoodhoo’s are a super high boot, which is great for deep snow and very wet conditions. Yes, I wear gaiters when I snowshoe…so mid calf boots are not totally necessary, but they do provide added warmth and protection. I loved wearing these when I stepped into deep powder, knowing that snow wouldn’t get in over the top of my boot.

  • Nice and warm. The Keen Hoodhoo’s are warm… they have 200 grams of insulation, and on cold snowy days my legs and feet were warm. The gusseted tongue also helps keep out snow, in case you aren’t wearing gaiters.

  • Price is right! These boots retail for about $140, but I’ve seen them on sale.
  • Convenient, on/off features. Putting on winter boots can be challenging, but this pair has pull tabs in the back as well as a metal ring at the top of the tongue, which makes it easier to get on and off.
  • Sturdy rubber sole with good traction. It is important to have good traction in winter boots, because slipping on snow and rock is never fun! The soles of these boots are sturdy, have good traction, and are fully compatible with my Kahtoola Microspikes, which I wear in icy conditions.

Cons:

  • Runs a little wide. I have found most Keen shoes and boots are cut a little wider than other brands, and the Hoodhoo High Lace Boots are no exception. If you have a medium to wide foot, you’ll be fine. If you’ve got a narrow width foot, you may have to wear a thick pair of mountaineering socks with these boots like I do!
  • Faux shearling lining matted down. The faux shearling lining at the top of the boots is less plush than I would have expected. It still kept me warm, but it would be nice if it were softer and thicker!

Specs:

  • Sole: Multi-directional lug soles (good traction).
  • Lining: Faux shearling lining.
  • Outer materials: Waterproof full grain leather upper.
  • Price: MSRP $139.95

The Keen Hoodhoo High Lace Boots are a great option for those looking for a mid-priced, high quality winter boot for casual and recreational use. They are great for snowshoeing and cold winter days!

Happy trails!

These boots sound good too. Do you know if they come in any other colors?

  • Hiking Lady

Great question, Donna! Yes, they come in three color combinations: black, slate brown (pair I have!), and a lighter shade of brown.
    Happy trails!
