If you want to see something exciting to get your adrenaline up, check out the trailer for the REEL Rock Film Festival!

In addition to the Banff Film Festival’s Radical Reels Tour, the REEL Rock Film Festival is another series of exciting short films that will be touring the U.S. this fall!

These films are entirely focused on the sports of rockclimbing and mountaineering, whereas the Radical Reels Tour also includes BASE jumping, slacklining, backcountry skiing, and sports I’ve never even imagined like parachute skiing!

I plan to check out these films for the beautiful scenery and to watch other individuals who are far braver than me pull off some amazing rock climbing and mountaineering accomplishments!

I went last year for the first time and the footage is amazing! Let’s just say that if you like outdoor adventures, you’ll love these short films.

The film festival is presented locally all around the world, with hundreds of stops in Canada and the United States and many stops in Europe, South America, and Asia.

Some examples of where the Radical Reels Tour will be traveling to:

• California – Costa Mesa: Sept. 29, 2010 at Orange Coast College Library



• Utah – Springdale: Oct. 3, 2010 at Zion Adventure Company

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and environmentalist

I watched the new film 180° SOUTH: Conquerors of the Useless, that traces the journey of adventurer Jeff Johnson, as he travels to Patagonia and enjoys the truly rugged landscape, following the footsteps of Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins.

Yvon and Doug made a similar trip in 1968, an adventure that forever changed the lives of these men that went on to establish 2 great apparel businesses: Patagonia and ESPRIT. They’ve also become influential environmentalists and conservationists.

The film is about far more than the natural beauty of Patagonia, the ideal playground for adventure seekers. Instead, it is a story about environmental awareness and a call to action.

It is an eye opening look at our planet, and well worth watching both for the adventure story and environmental message.

In August 2010, I’ll be checking out this film for sure! National Geographic Entertainment will be showing The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest, a film about George Mallory and whether or not he made the first successful summit bid of Everest in 1924.

In 1999, the mountaineer Conrad Anker found Mallory’s body on Everest. Everything was intact except for the picture of his wife Ruth, which Mallory had promised to place on the summit. Did he succeed or not? Apparently this movie will explore it in detail.

There is a biography of George Mallory of the same title, The Wildest Dream, that is now out of print.

Have you seen the movie Grizzly Man? I finally saw it with some friends, and got to hear the story of Timothy Treadwell, the man who went to live with the grizzlies in Alaska.

While there are some redeeming features to the film, and I think the director did a great job sorting through countless hours of footage to weave together a story of Treadwell’s life in the beautiful Alaskan wilderness, I found the story to be quite controversial.

Now there is a popular musical composition that is hitting YouTube by storm called Upular. It is a music video using images from the award winning movie set to a very interesting/modern soundtrack that was composed using chords, bass notes, and vocal samples from the movie. I enjoyed it, and I hope you do too!

North Face is based on the true story of two German climbers, Toni Kurz [...]]]> There is a new movie hitting selected U.S. theaters this month: Philipp Stölzl’s North Face: A True Story. If you’re like me and love adventure and survival movies, then you may be just as eager to see this film!

North Face is based on the true story of two German climbers, Toni Kurz and Andi Hinterstoisser, who attempted to scale Eiger’s North Face in 1936.

Eiger is an extremely famous mountain in the Swiss Alps, a 13,000 foot peak whose north face remained unclimbed until the 1930s. At that time it became famous for being the only unsolved climbing “problem” and the Nazis determined that German climbers should conquer the north wall in advance of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

Notorious for spontaneous rockfall, quickly shifting weather, and a sheer rock face, it isn’t surprising that over 64 climbers have died attempting Eiger’s north face. Will the German climbers in the movie make it to the top and back? History tells us the answer, but I’m looking forward to seeing how the movie portrays the climb.

After watching the trailer, it sure looks like this one is going to be filled with suspense!
