Reel Rock 2010 Film Tour

If you want to see something exciting to get your adrenaline up, check out the trailer for the REEL Rock Film Festival!

In addition to the Banff Film Festival’s Radical Reels Tour, the REEL Rock Film Festival is another series of exciting short films that will be touring the U.S. this fall!

These films are entirely focused on the sports of rockclimbing and mountaineering, whereas the Radical Reels Tour also includes BASE jumping, slacklining, backcountry skiing, and sports I’ve never even imagined like parachute skiing!

I plan to check out these films for the beautiful scenery and to watch other individuals who are far braver than me pull off some amazing rock climbing and mountaineering accomplishments!

For screenings in your area, check out the REEL Rock website.

Short Films that Will Take Your Breath Away!

The Banff Mountain Film Festival’s Radical Reels Tour is going on its world tour! I went last year for the first time and the footage is amazing! Let’s just say that if you like outdoor adventures, you’ll love these short films.

The film festival is presented locally all around the world, with hundreds of stops in Canada and the United States and many stops in Europe, South America, and Asia.

Some examples of where the Radical Reels Tour will be traveling to:

  • California – San Diego: Sept. 28, 2010 at Adventure 16
  • California – Costa Mesa: Sept. 29, 2010 at Orange Coast College Library
  • Banff Film Festival

  • Utah – Springdale: Oct. 3, 2010 at Zion Adventure Company
  • Utah – Salt Lake City: March 3, 2011 at the Univ. of Utah Outdoor Program
  • Colorado – Grand Junction: March 1, 2011 at Mesa State College

Be sure to check out their website for the festival details in your town. Have fun!

New movie review: The Wildest Dream

The Wildest DreamOn Friday night I had the chance to see the newly released film, The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest!

Who was the first person to climb Mount Everest? The Wildest Dream is a well done documentary that investigates this question, and seeks to find out whether or not George Mallory could have been the first person to climb Mount Everest in 1924.

Check out the Hiking Lady movie review of The Wildest Dream.

An Epic Patagonian Adventure

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and environmentalist

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and environmentalist

Surfing, climbing, and mountaineering in Patagonia! Sign me up! With some surfing lessons first ;)

I watched the new film 180° SOUTH: Conquerors of the Useless, that traces the journey of adventurer Jeff Johnson, as he travels to Patagonia and enjoys the truly rugged landscape, following the footsteps of Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins.

Yvon and Doug made a similar trip in 1968, an adventure that forever changed the lives of these men that went on to establish 2 great apparel businesses: Patagonia and ESPRIT. They’ve also become influential environmentalists and conservationists.

The film is about far more than the natural beauty of Patagonia, the ideal playground for adventure seekers. Instead, it is a story about environmental awareness and a call to action.

It is an eye opening look at our planet, and well worth watching both for the adventure story and environmental message.

Check out my full review of 180° SOUTH: Conquerors of the Useless. If you’ve seen it, I would love to hear your reaction!

Movie of the Month: National Parks America’s Best Idea

National Parks America's Best Idea

In 2009, acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns released a new documentary, National Parks: America’s Best Idea.

I am sure many of you got to watch the Ken Burns series on public television last fall. But were your expectations met?

I thoroughly enjoyed the series, yet I was hoping for even more. Check out my full review of National Parks: America’s Best Idea.
