Hiking the Appalachian Trail?
A Walk in the Woods
by Bill Bryson
If you want to read a humorous, well-written tale of a man’s journey with his friend hiking the Appalachian Trail, this book is for you. Bill Bryson, a trail novice at the outset of the book, tells his first-person story of his decision to hike the trail, and interweaves an eye opening look at how the American wilderness is at risk. For anyone who has ever bought backpacking gear, Bill’s recount of his shopping trip at a New Hampshire outdoors store will be sure to make you laugh and perhaps make you realize why I find my gear checklist so helpful!
After reading this one you may be inspired to be an Appalachian Trail “thru hiker” and attempt the entire 2175 miles, or else at least yearn to do sections of it. Animal and plants lovers will definitely enjoy Bryson’s descriptions of the Great Smoky Mountains. No wonder that is the most visited National Park in the U.S.!
